10 Questions for Roy’s Iron DNA

Roy's Iron DNA profile

1) Who are you, who is in the band, who does what in the studio and on stage?

We are Roy’s Iron DNA, a four-piece indie/electro outfit from the Scottish borders and Berwick upon Tweed. We are made up of Ian Thompson (songwriter/keys/vocals/loops) , Nick Holmes (Guitar), Steve Walker (bass) and Callum Knox (drums/samples).

2) How long have you been writing and performing in this way?

We have been doing this for around the last 6-7 years with this band amongst others that we all play in.

3) How exactly do you work / write / record?

When we write, Ian is the main songwriter and comes to us with the bare electronic track. We then throw around ideas and add live instruments over the top to fill it out, although the tracks work fine as just electronic!

4) How do you feel your studio/recording style informs the way you perform your music live (or vice versa)?

Our live style is pretty much the same as how we operate in the studio and in rehearsals, which keeps us feeling nice and at ease on the stage.

5) What’s been happening lately and what’s new with you?

We had an album out in June this year which is the 3rd album for Roy’s, and the 2nd with our current line up. Its also the first album to have the full live band recorded as well as the electronic beats. We released it as CD but also as an augmented reality newspaper which we will have plenty of on Saturday. We had 10,000 made and have distributed them all over Scotland. Basically you download an app on your smart device then scan each page of the paper for a track and video. We had a video made for each track all from different directors from as far away as Tokyo! The album will also be released as a cassette tape as part of Cassette Store Day in Germany.

6) When was the last time you played Edinburgh (and where)?  What do you remember about that experience?

Our last Edinburgh show was in The Mash House just off Cowgate. It was chaos as it was some kind of circus theme and we played around 1.30 in the morning. Very good, though! We were followed by a scantily clad gentleman doing hula hoops and juggling!

7) If you’ve played Limbo before, what did you like/rate about the experience?  If you’ve not played Limbo before, what have you heard about it?

N/A

8) What’s next, coming up after this gig, for you and what are you generally looking forward to right now…?

After this show we will return to our home town of Berwick next Saturday (17th) and do a fundraiser at Cafe Kasmiranda for our forthcoming mini-tour! We fly to Czech Republic on the 28th for 2 shows in Germany, (Chemnitz and Leipzig) and a show in Czech (Zabreh). Very exciting! This will be our second outing to Europe.

9) If you have any other passions/opinions you’d like to share, if there’s anything else you feel strongly about, pls feel free to tell us about it here…?

We have a strong passion for Aliens. For reals.

10) How would you describe what you do – in a nutshell – to someone who’s never seen you before?

If you come and see us, expect to involuntarily chuck shapes to our energetic live show which will cover haus bangers, chilled electronica and dark trip-hop. Also expect a pair of cords from our bassman, Steve.
