Ten Questions for Dead Boy Robotics

Dead Boy Robotics 2015

1) Who are you, who is in the band, who does what in the studio and on stage?

We are Dead Boy Robotics, a three piece noise pop band from Edinburgh. Mike is on guitar and vocals, Gregor is on bass and vocals, and Gareth beasts the drums.

2) How long have you been writing and performing in this way?

2015 is the first time we’ve played using only guitar, bass and drums. Our older material was a dense mix of laptops, synths, backing tracks, guitar, bass and live drums. For our new songs we thought we’d strip our sound right back.

3) How exactly do you work / write / record?

Gregor and Mike write ideas for songs that are then worked on in the practice room, and further tweaked, sometimes beyond the point of all recognition, in the studio.

4) How do you feel your studio/recording style informs the way you perform your music live (or vice versa)?

We usually find that our songs exist one way on record, then as we re-learn how to play them after recording, they evolve and change to exist in another way live.

5) What’s been happening lately and what’s new with you?

Well, our second album, New Cells, is due to be released digitally on November 20th. It was recored at Tape in Edinburgh, and mastered at the Lodge in New York. A limited edition vinyl will be available in 2016.

6) When was the last time you played Edinburgh (and where)?

Our last Edinburgh show was playing the first ever Tape Nights at Tape recording studio in Edinburgh. It was an intimate show – playing to about 40 people crammed into the live room.

7) If you’ve played Limbo before, what did you like/rate about the experience?  If you’ve not played Limbo before, what have you heard about it?

We’ve played Limbo a few times now. It’s always a great show, and always with great bands. What we’ve found is that the sound on-stage and out front is always consistently good. Definitely recommend the venue to other bands looking to play here.

8) What’s next, coming up after this gig, for you and what are you generally looking forward to right now…?

Next for us is our sophomore album being released. See question 5 🙂

9) If you have any other passions/opinions you’d like to share, if there’s anything else you feel strongly about, pls feel free to tell us about it here…?

We played a lot of Destiny over the past year. Does that count?

10) How would you describe what you do – in a nutshell – to someone who’s never seen you before?

Dead Boy Robotics are loud, usually shambolic but always entertaining.
