1) Who are you, who is in the band, who does what in the studio and on stage?
We are The Jellyman’s Daughter! Emily Kelly on vocals and guitar, Graham Coe on vocals and cello. Also, Graham studies sound production so he was involved in a lot of the recording for the album, and produced ‘Honey’ entirely.
2) How long have you been writing and performing in this way?
About 2 and half years, something like that. Our very first gig was at Hogmanay in Aberdeen, it was fun!
3) How exactly do you work / write / record?
It’s always a very balanced process between us – we know that in a lot of bands the songs are contributed mainly from one person and the rest of the band basically orchestrate, but every stage of our songwriting is a team effort. We both have very particular ideas about what we want; it’s fortunate that we’re similar in that respect. However another aspect of the band that creates something new is the fact that we’re different in terms of our musical backgrounds and what we understand in music – Emily has an amazing ability to pick out a good song and a melody and recognise genius in simplicity whereas Graham tends to think about the sound, the texture and more intricate and alternative musical ideas. When we write songs we meet in the middle and produce a middle ground between those two distinct musical philosophies.
4) What’s been happening lately and what’s new with you?
Recently we released our debut album! It’s available on Bandcamp.
We’ve also been playing and will continue to play a string of tour dates in support of the album launch. We had a great time at the (sold-out!) Edinburgh album launch and we’ll be heading down to England soon for a few dates there (York, Nottingham, London), which will be fun! All of the dates are visible on our website or our Facebook page. The most remarkable thing that happened so far was a drunk Glaswegian on the train correctly identifying Graham’s instrument as a cello. Amazing!
5) If you’ve played Limbo before, what did you like/rate about the experience? If you’ve not played Limbo before, what have you heard about it?
We’ve heard Limbo is one of the best music nights in town, and we can’t wait to be a part of it 🙂
6) What’s next, coming up after this gig, for you and what are you generally looking forward to right now…? (If you have a record coming out, pls tell us about it here – what is it, where can we find it etc? Plus anything else of note…?)
We’ll be finishing off the album launch tour in October, then on November 7th we’re supporting the incredible Southern Tenant Folk Union in Haddington, which is cool as we’ve been fans of STFU for years now. Then we’ll get to work on album number two 🙂
7) If you have any other passions/opinions you’d like to share, if there’s anything else you feel strongly about, pls feel free to tell us about it here…?
Earlier this year we supported an awesome duo-plus-three from Brooklyn called Lucius; they’re pretty much hittin’ it big right now, but in case you don’t catch them, do go and listen to their album, it’s amazing. We’d like to shout out to Kat Healy too, who we’ll be playing with in London; she recently released an EP and it’s laaaavely, check that out too! Aaaaaand Emily feels strongly about good films and Graham feels strongly about good coffee. What more is there to life?
