Another killer double bill and this week it's an all Edinburgh one, as XVECTORS and Chutes go head to head. If you already know what we're talking about, then you probably want to make sure all your mates know as well, if you haven't already told them where it's all happening. And, don't forget, the Black Spring DJs will be there to make you DANCE and the Limbo bar has an exclusive discount on selected bottled beers (at £2 a pop), so basically this means you can have a great night out for less than a tenner. Oh yes!
Thanks to everybody who battled the blizzards to witness Damn Shames and Fangs at Limbo. Fangs lived up to all our expectations and more: expect to be seeing and hearing a lot more of their glam-punk style this year. Local boys Damn Shames ensured the energy didn't dissipate and best of luck to them as they follow up the sell-out success of their recent single on tour. See pics on our Facebook group here
Photos from all the nights can be found here FAY FIFE (THE REZILLOS) SINGS PUNK DUSTY + NANOBOTS With The Voodoo Rooms offering a special Valentine's meal in the restaurant and ballroom, Limbo will be a late starter next week, opening at 9pm instead of 8, with the first band, Nanobots, on at 10.15. However, for those willing to wait, the post-dinner entertainment will be even more exclusive. The highlight of the club's lifespan thus far, we present the solo live debut of Fay Fife, front-woman of Edinburgh's most famous original punks, The Rezillos and their 'art-pop' spin-off, The Revillos. A pocket gig by special arrangement, this is a UNIQUE opportunity as Fay brings her own material - too girly for her erstwhile punk outfit - and a new backing band exclusively to Limbo. This is not part of a tour. 'It's a bit of an experiment,' says Fay. But, having already heard some of the material, we guarantee that when Fay Fife Sings Punk Dusty, a lot of people, and not just the lovers, are going to want to hear it. Nanobots do their own electro-rock thing - quite magnificently, too. "Nanobots are Tiny Wee Robots that form an autonomous swarm (of two) to produce high tech Electronic Space rock," they say. In other words, it's the perfect complement. XVECTORS are about to follow up the wide-spread critical acclaim for last year's single on Optimo's OSCarr label with their debut album for Mute Records* offshoot Blast First (see below). A recent set at Fast demonstrated all the vim and vigour of their best performances and apparently that was pretty rugged! It's new wave dance-rock and the kind of music that will set your pulse racing and your feet on fire. THE FACTS: Rory Connaghan: lead vocals, guitars David Caldwell: programming, guitars Paul MacEachen: bass, backing vocals Jon Murray: drums, percussion Late 2003: Tired of the dearth of decent bands in the area and itching to get some of their own musical ideas down, four lads from Edinburgh form a band citing extremely diverse influences (see myspace). 2003-2004: xvectors play a series of rapturously received shows at various club nights and venues, including London uber club Our Disco and one of the now-legendary Chateau happenings in Glasgow, stomping ground of Franz Ferdinand and friends. Early 2005: The band's debut single comes out on a tiny London-based indie label, featuring the group’s stunning Movies set-closer and a visceral cover of Jamie Principles Chicago house classic, Your Love. 2004-2005: Various xvectors fans tip off Glasgow’s JD Twitch and JG Wilkes of Optimo fame about the band. Eventually they see the band play, love them immediately, book them for Optimo and offer them a deal to release their next record on the club’s nascent label, OSCarr (aka Optimo Singles Club And Related Recordings). Late 2006: after almost a year of record company squabbling, xvectors are eventually set free to release a new EP, Now Is The Winter Of Our Discotheque on OSCarr. The press are all over it, with the EP getting The Guardian’s record of the week, Mixmag’s Top 100 Releases Of The Year and one of the tracks turning up on Tom Middleton & Fred Deakin's Face Off mix CD (free with DJ Magazine) among other worthy accolades. March/April 2007: Famous fans Klaxons invite xvectors to open for them on their first major European tour. The band duly oblige and proceed to play some of the best shows of their lives to ecstatic sold out crowds in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Sep 07: Band play Connect festival to rapturous response. Nov 07: Provide Klaxons tour-support again. A debut album has recently been finished and is due for release by the legendary Blast First (petite) label, a sub-division of the even more legendary Mute Records, xvectors thus joining the awe-inspiring likes of Sonic Youth, Depeche Mode, Moby, Goldfrapp, Nick Cave, Yazoo, Dinosaur Jnr, Plastikman/Richie Hawtin, Buzzcocks, Cabaret Voltaire, Maps, Suicide, The Slits, Liars and Pan Sonic, among many others. THE PRESS "A bitchin n moanin belter helping set club-land's new agenda" (The Guardian Guide, Pick Of The Week) "Expect this to rock Optimo" (Mixmag) Top 100 Singles, 20066 (Mixmag) 9/10 (Vice Magazine) 6/7 (One Week To Live) 4/5 (The Skinny) see all press clippings here: www.blastfirstpetite.com see also: www.studio-80.nl/video myspace.com/xvectors Newcomers Chutes are one of the tightest and most promising young outfits to have emerged from Edinburgh in eons. Great song writing skills, excellent, energetic tunes; instantly accessible new wave pop. These guys have an incredibly bright future. THE FACTS "Chutes are from Edinburgh in Scotland; We play music together. We love it. We have recorded some songs in Chem19 studios in Glasgow. We are going into the studio very soon to work on new material." (Chutes) Played T in the Park & Rockness festivals last year and shared stages with Blood Red Shoes, Youthmovies, The Wombats, The Silent Years and countless great Scottish bands at the I Fly Spitfires nights at Cabaret Voltaire and other venues... THE PRESS "AN EDINBURGH five-piece who mix the cold heart of Editors with the warm guitar melody of Idlewild. Daniel James Abercrombie is a top wordsmith who sounds like Tom Smith - at last a Scot who doesn't want to sound like Liam Gallagher or Alex Kapranos. First song It's You, In Support Of Me kicks off with a rhythm from The Police and a guitar and vocal melody from The Associates. It's so polished it's difficult to believe the band aren't in the charts. Lyrics "Am I nothing but air?/a package travelled here" conjure up great Eighties bands such as Duran Duran, who also mixed emotion with disconnected imagery. Second song Night Vision reminds me of ABC or Spandau Ballet but with a modern, art rock rhythm and Abercrombie's voice taking it into a different league. Another Scots band that deserve huge success." (Rick Fulton, Daily Record, Aug '07) myspace.com/chutesmusic / chutesmusic.com
